Math/Stat Club Meeting

Tuesday, April 4th, 2006

Location: Gildemeister 327

Meeting started at 9:04 pm (21:04)

Not all officers were present (sadness)

The meeting started with introductions.  I can’t really convey the introducing of people very well through minutes so… sorry?

Math rules!  (This wasn’t actually said but basically everybody was thinking it)

A sign-in sheet was passed around for all members who were not on the mailing list.

The first real order of business was that the Math/Stats club bulletin board at the west end of the hall on the 3rd floor of Gilde needs to be redone.  Amanda volunteered to head that up once again.  Dason and Cody volunteered to be grunt workers in what promises to be the most complex project in ages.

The Math/Stats club is scheduled to play the CS in ultimate Frisbee at the CS club’s picnic on Friday, September 8th at 5:00 pm.  Here is the “official” notification I received from the President of the CS club through the very official medium of Facebook.

To start off the year the Computer Science Club is hosting a picnic with the Computer Science faculty. Everyone is invited! There will be free food and drinks compliments of the CS club. This will be our first meeting of the year. We will pick the time for our weekly meetings and discuss some of the events we are planning this month include a LAN party and a trip to the ACM conference.

Where: Jaycee Shelter (across Sarnia from East Lake Apartments)
When: Friday, September 8, 2006 @ 5:00 PM

At 6:30 there is going to be an Ultimate Frisbee game vs. the Math/Stat Club

Before the picnic @ 3:00 the club is going to revisit our block that we adopted during spruce up Winona last spring and re-spruce it up. Meeting in the Watkins lobby by 3:00 for those interested in helping.

We hope to see you all at the picnic!!

any questions, use the discussion board

So try to stop on by and play some Ultimate Frisbee if you can make it.

Math/Stat Club shirts was the next item on the agenda.  It was suggested that instead of ordering two separate shirts during a given school year that we cut back to just ordering one shirt design per year as to try to increase our order size and save some money.  A few suggestions for ideas were: a nice polo, fleece zip up, pants, and hats.  The fleece was generally a well accepted idea, however, it would probably be the most expensive.  There was also a T-shirt design sent to me via email that I received at the end of the meeting.  All ideas will be discussed further at the next meeting.

Emily dropped her pen.  It was an honest mistake. Everybody drops a pen at sometime in their life.  Why are you making such a big deal out of it?

We need to elect new Presidents for the club.  Emily and Suzanne will be forced to retire at the end of the semester due to the constitution.  The Presidents have a variety of duties such as: running meetings, planning activities, organizing the picnic, planning out all the fun stuff, and of course Presidenting it up.  We would like to elect two new Presidents so that it’s not so much work for one person.  It is possible to only have one though.  Keep this in mind and let us know if you or somebody you know would be interested.

There will be a club fair on October 6th from 10:00 to 2:00.  It’s basically going to rock.  If you want to help sit at the table and basically be a cool person send an email to either Suzanne or Emily (SEFrye6414@winona.edu or EMHagel4815@winona.edu).

The ASO meeting will be on 9-07-06 from 5:00-6:00pm.  This meeting deals with money issues and constitutional stuff about clubs that sounds relatively boring but important.

It was decided that we should probably change the time at which the club meets.  It was suggested that we keep the meetings earlier so that some faculty could make the meetings easier but Malone suggested to try to make it so that more students could make it because if faculty had something to say they would find a way to get their message through.  So as of now the tentative time for the next meeting is Wednesday, October 4th at 8:00 pm.  It is the Wednesday of homecoming week and it will help us remind people about the club fair.  We are trying to find a time that works for the most people so if this time slot doesn’t work for you usually let us know and we will see what we can do.

Brant Deppa (new chair of the math/stats department) stated that we WILL start up an annual spaghetti dinner once more.  It used to be a thing where the faculty would put on a dinner for the students so they could bond and it would just be a jolly ol’ time.  He basically wanted to know what time would work best.  Overall it was decided that it would probably be best to do it sometime near the beginning of second semester.  We want to plan a time far enough in advanced so the word can get out.

Deppa also wanted to start up some sort of problem contest.  He was thinking either a problem of the month or problem of the week but it will most likely be a problem of the month.  There would be an incentive and he liked he idea of the title “Win Brant Deppa’s money”.

Once more there was most likely a moment shared by the entire room where there was a split second of silence and everybody thought about how awesome math is.

Chris Malone (professor) had a lot of points to bring up.  The first of which being that every year we’ve gone to the U of M for a biostatistics open house.  Deppa has agreed to drive.  It would be on October 20th.  This is a Friday and we would most likely go up for the day, leaving around 7:30ish and being back around 5ish.  You would get a free lunch and a great time.  Try to spread the word.  This is a chance to explore what a grad program in statistics would be like.  There is a sign up sheet on Deppa’s door so you can give him your email address so you will know where to meet and such.

The First Undergraduate Statistics Project Competition (USPROC) is coming up.  We used to compete in this regularly and we are hoping to get in it again.  It is basically a competition where you have to use real data and analyze it statistically.  I could go through all of the requirements *or* I could say that if you want more information you can follow this link!  www.causeweb.org/usproc.php  Enjoy!  There is a cash prize of up to $750 so you might want to look into it.  You can do it by yourself or have up to teams of three.

As you most likely know there is a National Mathematics Honor Society on campus.  We would like to get a National Statistics Honor Society started on campus as well.  Mu Sigma Rho is the national honorary society for statistics.  It wouldn’t take much work to get things going but we would need at least five charter members.

On September 18th we have a student seminar from 4:00 to 5:00 pm.  This is a good seminar to go to since it is done by students and will be more light hearted and it will be easier to connect to what they are saying.  Malone said he would send out an email with more information.  You should think about coming.

We then talked about the activities we would like to do this year.  The activity for September is the Ultimate Frisbee game with the CS club on 9-08.  Tentatively we have Capture the Flag scheduled for the October activity and we will do more planning at the next meeting.  If you have any suggestions for activities you can send an email to Dkurkiew3438@winona.edu or just bring them to the next meeting.

We completely forgot about math jokes

The meeting ended at 6:10 pm.
