There will be a candidate speaker for new faculty members. The last one will be this
Friday (the 20 th ) from 12:0012:
50 in Gilde 327. This speaker will be more student
oriented and should be understandable to anyone with an intro to stats background.
The first colloquium will be on February 6 th . Here are the details.
Speaker: Terrence Wyberg of Mathematics Education at the U of MN
Title: When is getting all the correct answers on the fraction test not enough? What teachers need know to
help children operate with fractions.
Abstract: This talk will present results from various research projects investigating children’s thought
processes when ordering, estimating, and operating with fractions. The results from this research will be
used to highlight the importance of teacher content knowledge and provide suggestions for effective
professional development experiences.
Meeting times were discussed and it was decided to change them to 9 O’clock on the first
Tuesday of every month. This means the next meeting will be Tuesday, February 7 th at
9:00.
Voting for officers for next year is approaching and hopefully we will vote at the next
meeting. So everybody start thinking about if you want to run for a position.
Fudge Off Update: As of Wednesday the fudge off was able to bring in approximately 14
dollars. There is still one more day left and hopefully we can spread even more fudgey
joy.
Assessment day is Wednesday, February 15 th . Everybody gets the day off and
sophomores have the option to take a test which will allow them to register early. The
club is planning on going on a trip to Ames, IA to the grad school there. The plan would
be to go down either Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning and spend the day
touring the campus and possibly listen to a speaker. If you’re interested and weren’t at
the meeting you can email Suzanne SEFrye6414@winona.edu and tell her you would like
more information or to be signed up. We will also, hopefully, get something set up for
people who can’t go to Ames. Discussion will continue at the next meeting.
Another Club Fair is coming up! Wednesday, February 8 th from 102.
We need people
to sit at the table and have a good time telling people about how awesome Math/Stats
Club is. Once again, if you are interested you can email Suzanne and tell her what times
you are free.
Friday, April 14 th there are plans to go to the Science Museum to see the Calculus
exhibit. There will be more information about this during future meetings.
We need you to help plan the Math/Stats Picnic! Tentative plans are to have the picnic
either April 20 th , 21 st , 27 th or 28 th . We need to get a committee together to help plan the
picnic so it can be supertotallyawesome.
If you would like to be on the committee or
just more information about the committee and their responsibilities email Suzanne.
The ASO meeting will be Thursday, February 16 th in the Student Union from either 56
or 67.
There were two jokes told at the meeting this time. It was awesome.
The meeting ended at 7:11 pm
